Privacy Statement

Last Updated: March 2026

1. Introduction

Timothy Calford, operating as CalfordMath ("we," "us," or "our"), operates MathMission, an educational mathematics platform. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how we collect, use, and share your information. This Privacy Statement explains our practices regarding the collection and use of information through the MathMission service.

Important: This Privacy Statement applies to everyone who uses MathMission, including students, teachers, and visitors who use optional guest preview (try-before-sign-in) access. By using MathMission, you consent to the collection and use of information as described in this Privacy Statement.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Authentication Information

We use Microsoft Azure Active Directory or Google OAuth for user authentication when you choose to sign in. The following applies once you authenticate; it does not apply to guest preview alone, because we do not receive your Microsoft or Google profile until you complete sign-in (see Section 2.5).

When you sign in, we collect the following information from your authentication provider (Microsoft or Google):

We do not collect or store your Microsoft or Google account password. Authentication is handled entirely through the authentication provider's secure OAuth system (Microsoft User.Read permission scope or Google profile/email scopes).

2.2 Educational Progress Data

For registered users (signed in with Microsoft or Google), to provide educational services and track learning progress, we collect and store:

2.3 Usage Data

We automatically collect certain information about how you use the Service, including:

2.4 Payment Information (Teachers Only)

For teacher accounts with paid subscriptions, payment processing is handled by Stripe, a third-party payment processor. We do not collect, store, or have access to your credit card information. Stripe processes payments according to their own privacy policy and security standards.

We may collect and store:

2.5 Guest Preview (Try Before Sign-In)

If you use guest preview without signing in, we do not collect your name, email, or profile from Microsoft or Google. We may still process:

Guest preview data is not tied to a class enrollment in the same way as a signed-in student who has joined a class. Teachers do not receive individual guest preview records for students who have only used preview mode.

If you later sign in, you may be offered the option to copy your guest preview progress into your registered account as solo (non-class) progress only. Until you sign in, there is no Microsoft/Google-backed account on our systems for that preview.

3. How We Use Your Information

3.1 Providing the Service

We use your information to:

3.2 Teacher Access to Student Data

Important Notice: Teachers have access to view progress data, statistics, and performance information for students enrolled in their classes. This includes:

  • All question attempts and responses
  • Correct and incorrect answer patterns
  • Time spent on questions
  • Overall progress statistics
  • Performance analytics and heatmaps

This access is necessary for teachers to monitor student progress, provide educational support, and assess learning outcomes.

3.3 Leaderboards and Public Visibility

At the discretion of your teacher, your progress data may be displayed in leaderboards. Class and school leaderboards may show:

Student opt-out: You can individually choose to opt out of class and school leaderboards in your account settings. If you opt out, you will not appear in class or school leaderboards where your first name and last initial would otherwise be shown. Your progress will still be included in aggregate form for school, school board, and class leaderboards (e.g., totals and group statistics), but not as an individually named entry. Teachers control whether their classes participate in leaderboards; your individual opt-out overrides that for your own visibility.

3.4 Service Improvement

We may use aggregated, anonymized data to:

3.5 Communication

We may use your email address to:

4. Information Sharing and Disclosure

4.1 With Teachers

As described above, teachers have access to student progress data for students in their classes. This is a core feature of the Service and is necessary for educational purposes.

Guest preview activity is not shared with teachers as individual student records, because preview users are not enrolled in a class through the guest session.

4.2 With Other Students (Leaderboards)

If your teacher enables class or school leaderboards, other students may see your first name, last initial, and performance statistics—unless you opt out. You can individually choose to opt out in your account settings. If you opt out, you will not appear in class or school leaderboards where your name would be shown; you will still be included in aggregate for school, school board, and class leaderboards but not as an individually named entry. This sharing is controlled by your teacher's settings, and your opt-out overrides that for your own listing.

4.3 With Service Providers

We may share information with third-party service providers who help us operate the Service, including:

These service providers are contractually obligated to protect your information and use it only for the purposes we specify.

4.4 Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required by law or in response to valid legal requests, such as:

4.5 Business Transfers

In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred to the acquiring entity, subject to the same privacy protections.

4.6 What We Do NOT Share

We do not:

5. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including:

However, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

6. Data Retention

6.1 Active Accounts

We retain your information for as long as your account is active and for a reasonable period thereafter to provide the Service and comply with legal obligations.

6.2 Account Deletion Process

If you request account deletion (available through the admin panel), the following process applies:

48-Hour Grace Period:

  • Your account deletion is initiated with a 48-hour grace period
  • During this time, you can change your mind by contacting support
  • Your subscription (if active) will be cancelled immediately

After the 48-hour grace period:

Subscription Period Retention (Teachers Only):

After subscription expiry (if not reinstated):

What we do NOT retain:

6.3 Educational Records

Student progress data and educational records are retained only while accounts are active. When a teacher's account is deleted, all associated student progress in their classes is also deleted. Students' own progress in other classes is not affected.

6.4 Guest Preview Data

Guest preview data is retained only as long as needed for the preview experience and our operations. Preview progress may be removed when you sign in and complete or decline transfer, when you end the guest session (for example, by closing the browser or clearing site data, depending on your browser), or when we run automated cleanup. In addition, guest preview records that show no activity for approximately seven (7) days may be permanently deleted by a scheduled cleanup process. Retention details may be adjusted for reliability or abuse prevention; material changes will be reflected in this Privacy Statement.

6.5 Audit Logs

For legal compliance purposes, we maintain an audit log of account deletion requests, including: user ID, email address, deletion date, and subscription information. This log is kept for a minimum of 7 years as required by applicable privacy laws.

7. Your Rights and Choices

7.1 Access to Your Information

You have the right to:

7.2 Correction of Information

You can update certain information through your account settings. For information that cannot be updated directly, please contact us.

7.3 Deletion of Information

You may request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us. We will process deletion requests in accordance with our data retention policies and legal obligations.

7.4 Opt-Out of Leaderboards

You can individually choose to opt out of class and school leaderboards so that your first name and last initial do not appear there. In the Service, open the Info menu, then the Settings (or account settings) area, and use the leaderboard opt-out option for your class. If you opt out:

If the option is unavailable (for example, your teacher has disabled the class leaderboard), you can contact your teacher or us.

7.5 Guest Preview (Before You Have an Account)

If you use only guest preview, you do not yet have a registered MathMission account. Access and deletion rights tied to a verified account (for example, full account data export or the registered-user deletion workflow) apply after you sign in with Microsoft or Google. You can stop guest preview at any time by ceasing use, signing out or ending the session, or clearing site data for the Service in your browser; guest preview data may then be removed as described in Section 6.4.

8. Cookies and Browser Storage

We use the following in your browser:

Personal settings such as pen colour, highlighter, and similar tool preferences may be stored in your account on our servers (not as cookies). We do not use cookies or browser storage to analyze Service usage for advertising or cross-site tracking. You can clear or disable cookies and local storage in your browser settings; disabling session cookies will prevent you from staying signed in.

9. Third-Party Services

9.1 Authentication Providers

We use Microsoft Azure Active Directory or Google OAuth for authentication. Your use of Microsoft or Google authentication is subject to the respective provider's privacy policy and terms of service (Microsoft's privacy policy and terms of service, or Google's privacy policy and terms of service).

9.2 Stripe Payment Processing

For teacher subscriptions, payments are processed by Stripe. Stripe's collection and use of payment information is governed by Stripe's privacy policy. We do not have access to your full credit card information.

9.3 Links and Content from Other Websites

The Service may contain links to external websites (such as YouTube help videos) and may display images or other content from external sources. For example, images are sometimes sourced from Unsplash; attribution tooltips in the app link to the photographer or artist's page on Unsplash. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these external sites or services. We encourage you to review their privacy policies.

10. International Data Transfers

MathMission is operated from Canada. If you are located outside of Canada, your information may be transferred to and stored in Canada. By using the Service, you consent to the transfer of your information to Canada.

11. Changes to This Privacy Statement

We may update this Privacy Statement from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by:

Your continued use of the Service after such changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated Privacy Statement.

12. Contact Us

If you have questions, concerns, or requests regarding this Privacy Statement or our privacy practices, please contact us. Within the MathMission service, you can use the Contact Me tab in the Info menu: open the Info menu, then select the "Contact Me" tab to send a message. You can also reach us via:
